Kai frowned down at the data padd in his hand. Were the Alliance getting better with their coding or was he just having a bad day?

Shirogane padded past with a broom slung over his shoulder, humming under his breath...

He reversed course and took another look at Kai's face. "Everything all right?"

It was gifted to me. XD Hm, maybe not? It'll be fun to work around again

Kai scowled harder at the padd, tempted to throw it across the room and sulk for a bit before going back to it. He knew he wouldn't and not only because fear of doing just that still lingered, even though he was no longer held by the Alliance. Shirogane was alright, but what would the rest of the people on the base do if he didn't work hard? He didn't want to find out.

Shirogane tchhed under his breath, and leaned the broom against the wall behind Kai's chair. He didn't know much about Kai's background, but he was learning to read his body language, his expressions. One of the first things he'd learned was how much touch seemed to help.

(And maybe he liked that, too. He hadn't really had anyone to comfort.)

He was careful about it, though. Still didn't know what could trigger Kai. He touched Kai's shoulders gently, then started to rub. "You'll get it," he murmured.

He wasn't sulking. Or pouting. Either of those would have got him into trouble before so he definitely wasn't indulging in them now.

And of course he'd get it, who did Shirogane think he was? Naoto? He leant into the touch without thinking, it had been so long since he'd really had anyone to touch him who didn't also turn that touch into a weapon to use against him.

I can't believe how long it is since we first did this!

Shirogane smiled as Kai leaned into him. That was better. He'd been feeling a little tense, himself.

"I promise not to ask Naoto," he said solemnly, teasing just a little. Kai tended to rant, in his own way, about certain people's hamfisted halfassed methods.

I know! Over a year, at least

Kai sniffed huffily at that, but made no move to move away from Shirogane's touch. What would Naoto know anyway? There was no point in asking him.

He did need to get this decrypted, though. It could be important.

Maybe a distraction. He needed to mention this anyway.

Still working away gently at Kai's shoulders, Shirogane said idly, "The room next to mine is all done now. If you feel like getting out of the infirmary permanently...?"

Kai's head comes up quickly and he gives Shirogane a hopeful look. Could he really? He didn't like staying in the infirmary - especially as he didn't need medical attention anymore - as he'd already spent far too much time in there than could be good for anyone.

And if the room was next to Shirogane's, all the better. At least he'd be living next door to someone reasonable.

Shirogane grinned. "Good. Okay. I can help you get set up any time, just tell me and I'll talk to Alyssa. I have some more work today but it's not urgent."

All the emo and trauma, right next door to each other. XD

Kai nodded vehemently: the sooner he could get set up in this new room the better. Maybe he'd sleep better in there than he did in the infirmary.

Hurrah. And very much in need of snuggles. XD

"I can go talk to her now...?" Shirogane said, thinking that was what Kai meant, but not being sure.

It was bizarre. There were days when he just knew what Kai wanted, without Kai having to do more than lift an eyebrow or flap a hand, but other days he really had to reach for it.

Kai beamed, scrambling to his feet, suddenly having the urge to be moving. Maybe dragging Shirogane to the infirmary to have that conversation right now.

Shirogane yelped as Kai was suddenly a blur. All right, so perhaps they were doing it now.

He grabbed his shoes as they headed towards the infirmary. Alyssa tended to scold about barefoot people in there.

Kai frowned back behind him when Shirogane failed to keep up. What was he doing? This was important! He waited impatiently before heading into the infirmary and waving at Alyssa when she looked up from her desk.

Shirogane shoved his shoes on somehow, and laughed a little as he got identical impatient looks from Alyssa and Kai simultaneously.

"Um, Alyssa," he said softly. "The room next to mine is ready, and I thought..."

Alyssa nodded.

Kai threw his arms up in the air in triumph, throwing himself at Shirogane to hug him quickly before realising what he was doing and let go hurriedly. Shirogane didn't seem to mind clinginess but he still didn't want to push it.

Shirogane had an armful of Kai. He moved to hug him back, but Kai'd already let go.

Repressing a grin, and blushing maybe just a little, Shirogane listened to Alyssa's instructions about taking Kai's things with them and about when to bring him back for checkups.

Kai hopped from foot to foot, not bothering to let go first. Did they really have to go through all this? He already knew all of this and he was pretty sure Shirogane did too. It was wasting time.

Shirogane took another padd, somehow balancing it on top of all the others, and blinked. That seemed to be it. Alyssa made a shooing motion, but she was smiling.

"Um, Kai? You have anything you want to pick up now?"

He looked around, considering. He didn't exactly have much in the way of clothes but it would probably be handy to have them. The pyjamas at any rate. Aside from that? There was only the padds that he'd need close to hand.

Shirogane nodded; Kai obviously didn't want anything much. He managed somehow to add the pyjamas to his pile, then followed Kai out the door. Alyssa called a cheerful farewell to them as they walked.

Shirogane was ridiculously excited to have Kai out. Free. All to himself, for a little while, at least.

Having got everything together Kai headed out the door without sparing a glance backwards. At least, not until he looked around to make sure Shirogane was keeping up properly.

As usual, Kai gave him that look that said, why aren't you keeping up? Sometimes it said, why aren't you bringing me food already, but somehow Shirogane always knew.

He opened his mouth to tell Kai where to turn, but hastily shut it again. Kai knew. Of course he knew where Shirogane's room was.

It was an automatic reaction by now to head into Shirogane's room and he had to backtrack quickly and keep going to the room next door instead. He hoped Shirogane hadn't noticed that embarrassing slip up and decided ignoring the event was the best plan.

The door to the empty-but-now-his room slid open and he looked around it. It wasn't much bigger than his room-slash-cell on the SCRTC base and with it being empty it was a little intimidating, but it was his, and he was going to make sure of that.

There was a bed, not much else. Shirogane put his armful down with a thankful sigh. "I know it's not much," he said uncomfortably. "We can get it set up. However you want."

Kai shook his head. It didn't really matter that it wasn't much right now, he had plenty of time to get it fixed up the way he wanted - assuming he didn't screw up and get himself kicked out - the only problem with that was finding stuff to fill it with.
