(lmao I know the feeling, I'm gonna email reply largely because it's much easier from work, which means generic icon, but I will try to make it clear who the POV character is in the text!)


There's a noise out in the main cavern. Gaku springs into action, half asleep, with birdlike reflexes.

I.e. he finds himself pointing a pillow at the intruder.

"Blue!" he says, in exasperation, eventually. "You scared me half to death!"

I back up a bit, watching the new guy warily. He's pointing a pillow at me, of all things, so maybe he's not that dangerous?

...What?

He's acting like he knows me, but I have no idea why he's calling me blue. I tilt my head at him, wondering if I need to make a break for it or not.

Blue looks weird.

...yeah, yeah, okay, so he always looks weird, but he doesn't always look intimidated by me. I lower my weap- the pillow embarrassedly, and scruff my hair. "Why are you up?" I ask him plaintively. "You should go back to bed!"

After a while, Cow-san comes plodding out in his black and white pyjamas, yawning.

Shit. Shit shit fuck fuck fuck. Ushigome. Why is he here too??

I back up so fast I don't realise I'm about to hit a wall until I do, then I realise I'm trapped. There's no way out of this room without going past him.

My fingers start scrabbling at the wall and I can feel my breathing speeding up. Damn it, no, don't fall apart. There's no one here to help me this time. If I want to get out of here, I need to do it myself.

It would help if my knees didn't feel like they were about to give out on me.

Feels like someone hit me. I'm slumped against a wall, dizziness flushing through me. But prodding my head carefully, my jaw, the base of my skull, doesn't find any actual wounds? What the hell happened?

...I'm in a cave.

I probably should have shoes on. The sand of it feels fairly uniform under my feet, at least, but the light is terrible. I don't particularly want to bleed wherever this is. If it's some kind of accident, someone kidnapped me, or I just got very drunk, it still wouldn't be good to leave a blood trail.

There's a little light over that way.

I pick up speed when I realise Kai's plastered against the wall with terror on his face, and Ushigome's standing in front of him. I skid in between the two of them, raising the hydrospanner I didn't even realise I was holding. Gaku starts spluttering, but Kai behind me is the only one I'm worried about. "You all right? Did he touch you?"

Black looks like he's about to cry. Silver has no shoes on, is scruffy as anything (apart from his hair) (of course) and just threw himself in front of Blue.

I'm so confused!

"Hold on, hold on, hold on," I babble. "No one's done anything to anyone! We're all part of a team here! Blue, what the hell's going on? Silver, why are you freaking out?"

Team? Team? That's a joke. Ushigome doesn't work with people, he uses them until he done with them. And he's acting all upset but it's not like it's the first time he's tried that.

Pretty sure panic is turning into hysteria and I'm not sure that's actually any better.

Watch yourself, I tell Shirogane. He likes to play upset, gives him more ways to fuck you over.

"Look after him," I say inadequately to Silver, nodding at Blue. He gives me a wary look but he steps back, puts a hand on Blue's shoulder. "Come on. Everyone get calmed down then we can figure this out."

I don't need looking after, I just need Ushigome away from me. Which Pillow guy seems to be doing, so at least something's going right. I don't relax as they leave the room, not right away. Just in case he's lurking to catch me off guard again.

He - is that Gaku? I vaguely know him - tugs Ushigome around a corner, and I turn to Kai properly. I'm careful to position us so between us we have a full range of vision. This is such a strange place.

"He might not've meant it badly," I say, trying to placate, but this is unsettling me, too. "Ushigome wasn't exactly behaving like himself, and that other guy seemed to know both of us."

This one I do, I send back, lashing out as someone pulls me off Ushigome. Not before I got off a good punch at his face though, hah. Take that.

I pull away from the guy shaking me with a glare, not deigning to talk to him, not if he's with him, already turning in Kai's direction as he points. Kai's presence is everywhere here, it's almost impossible to pin down exactly where he is.

Ah, there.

"There you are," I say as I walk into the open cave. Kai's leaning against a wall, looking pale but standing under his own power. Shirogane's there too, one hand on his shoulder, the other clutching a wrench. Huh, Ushigome didn't have any wrench shaped injuries, he must not have had the chance to use it.

"Here we are," I agree, speaking out loud for now. It's not exactly impossible for Kai to pick me up mentally, but I don't want to push it for the two of them. It takes a lot of focus and I need to be watchful of what's happening here.

It's a relief to see Ragi.

"So this means we're not having a joint hallucination, then? Where the hell is the base?"

"Well, it wouldn't be the first time," I say dryly, leaning against the wall next to Kai and nudging his shoulder. "But unless you somehow managed to drag me into it this time, no. Not a shared hallucination. And I have no idea what happened to the base either."

I pause, tilting my head as an unpleasant thought arrives. "It is shielding against random transporter beams, right?"

Ragi, at least, looks normal. Small and pissy and protective. (It's a relief to see him.)

My eyes go wide at that. "I - I think so? But I know they've had some problems with the generator lately. I helped Naoto patch it yesterday..."

"Well, that's just great," I grumble. "Do we even know where we are? I mean, everyone we've seen so far has been human. Is it some kind of, I don't know, free colony the Alliance hasn't got round to crushing yet?

What's going on out here? Is it an Org attack? I can't believe they'd dare come here, though, even at night. We kick their asses enough without them trying it on our home ground.

Huh, Black looks awful. Yellow looks grumpy, but that's nothing new.

"What's going on?" I yawn, padding over to Black to poke at him. "What happened to you?"

I flinch back from Blue, then grab at his finger, and grab at his shoulder.

"You don't hate me?" I ask, wonderingly.

Yellow's massaging the bridge of his nose. "You see him too, Black, right? There's another Blue?"

I blink, wondering if I heard that right, then scowl at him for being an idiot. "Of course I don't hate you," I snap. "Why would I hate you?"

My head snaps round as Yellow says that. "Hey!" I protest, "there's only one Blue!"

I stare at them suspiciously. "Are you trying to be funny?" Or is this some weird shared dreaming thing? That's a thing, right?

"Yes, he's here," Black agrees, scratching his head.

I point out into the main cavern. "Stick your head out there. But carefully. I don't actually want you to lose it."

I give him another suspicious look, but stick my head round the corner into the main room, only for my jaw to drop in outrage.

There's two impostors in there and one of them's snuggling up to Silver like glue.
